The sweltering Southern California heat proved no deterrent for the tens of thousands of music enthusiasts who converged on Irvine’s Great Park on Saturday for the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields music festival. This groundbreaking event, conceptualized and curated by global music phenomenon Olivia Rodrigo, not only delivered a powerful lineup of female artists but also championed a significant cause, raising substantial funds for organizations dedicated to women and girls.

A Groundbreaking Debut Amidst SoCal Heat
Despite temperatures soaring into the 90s, an estimated 45,000 attendees, as announced by Rodrigo herself prior to her headlining performance, flocked to the expansive sports complex. The festival grounds were transformed into a vibrant hub of activity, featuring rows of diverse food stalls and trucks, alongside engaging pop-up activations from various brands and sponsors. The iconic Great Park balloon was specially decorated for the occasion, and the park’s carousel provided a whimsical backdrop throughout the day. A notable detail was the presence of flower key symbols adorning booths and stalls, signifying women-owned businesses, a testament to the festival’s commitment to female entrepreneurship, with floral motifs permeating the entire festival landscape.
Logistically, the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields demonstrated a remarkable level of organization, with attendees experiencing relatively smooth operations, a feat for a first-time event of this magnitude. While the intense heat presented a challenge, with limited natural shade, the festival proactively addressed this by providing ample hydration stations across the grounds. The demographic of attendees was diverse, encompassing all ages, with a pronounced presence of women and girls, reflecting the festival’s core ethos, though a significant number of men also participated in the festivities.

An All-Women Lineup Takes Center Stage
Daisy Chain Fields proudly presented an all-encompassing lineup of 14 artists, gracing two distinct stages: the Marigold and the Dandelion. The Marigold stage hosted performances by Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, Die Spitz, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Garbage, and Not for Radio. Meanwhile, the Dandelion main stage resonated with the sounds of Eli, Santigold, Devon Again, Mitski, Doechii, Chappell Roan, and the headliner, Olivia Rodrigo, along with surprise guests. The girl group KATSEYE was initially slated to perform but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury sustained by one of its members, Megan. Despite their inability to perform, three members, Megan, Lara, and Yoonchae, made a special appearance on stage on Saturday.
Electrifying Performances and Powerful Messages
Doechii captivated the audience with her early evening set on the main stage, her vibrant presence amplified by striking pink body paint. Her 40-minute performance commenced with "XL," her collaboration with Blackpink’s Jennie, and culminated with her hit "Denial is a River." Expressing gratitude to Rodrigo, Doechii passionately stated, "We do it for the women. We do it for the gays. We do it for the trans women," earning a thunderous ovation from the crowd, underscoring the festival’s inclusive spirit.

Following Doechii, Chappell Roan commanded the stage in a striking purple miniskirt ensemble and a chic bob. Engaging the audience with her characteristic humor, Roan declared she was playing only her biggest hits during her 40-minute performance. The set kicked off with the infectious "Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl," immediately igniting a wave of dancing and singing throughout the venue. Her signature anthem, "Hot To Go!" proved to be a crowd favorite, with attendees mirroring her iconic dance moves in unison. The pop singer, maximizing her stage time, offered minimal commentary, concluding her set with the beloved "Pink Pony Club."
A Monumental Philanthropic Commitment
Olivia Rodrigo’s presence on stage preceded her 8:40 p.m. start time, as she took a moment to address the festival-goers. She reiterated the festival’s commitment to charitable giving, announcing a significant $10 million donation. However, Rodrigo then delivered a truly impactful surprise, inviting Melinda French Gates to the stage. Gates, in a momentous announcement, revealed her intention to match the festival’s donation, effectively doubling the total charitable contribution to an astounding $20 million.

The Daisy Chain Reaction philanthropy village served as a crucial hub for attendees to engage with and support a curated selection of organizations working tirelessly across critical areas such as reproductive rights, maternal health, economic empowerment, domestic violence prevention, and gender equity. The beneficiary organizations included Baby2Baby, Black Mamas Matter Alliance, Center for Reproductive Rights, FreeFrom, Jhpiego, Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health, National Domestic Workers Alliance, National Institute for Reproductive Health, National Women’s Law Center, and Planned Parenthood.
Rodrigo’s Headlining Set: A Celebration of Legacy and Future
Rodrigo launched the musical portion of her expansive hour-and-twenty-minute headlining performance with her recent hit, "Drop Dead." Throughout her set, she consistently expressed her gratitude to the enthusiastic crowd and shared her immense excitement.

Her performance was further elevated by the surprise appearance of three special guests. The first was the trailblazing Sarah McLachlan, a pioneer of the 90s music festival circuit whose Lilith Fair profoundly influenced female artists. Rodrigo acknowledged McLachlan’s legacy, stating that Daisy Chain Fields would not exist without her. The duo then delivered heartfelt renditions of McLachlan’s iconic songs, "Building a Mystery" and "Angel." The latter was dedicated to the legendary Dolly Parton, whose passing at the age of 80 earlier in the week had been a recent significant event in the music world. A poignant image of the country music icon was projected onto the screens during the performance.
Later in her set, which masterfully blended tracks from her latest album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl so in Love, with her earlier hits, Rodrigo welcomed Alanis Morissette to the stage. Morissette stepped in for Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who had to withdraw from the festival last minute due to a family emergency. Morissette and Rodrigo united for a powerful duet of the Canadian singer’s timeless anthem, "Ironic."

The crescendo of Rodrigo’s performance, and arguably the festival, arrived with the appearance of the legendary Stevie Nicks. Nicks joined Rodrigo on stage for an unforgettable rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s beloved hit, "Landslide." Before departing, Nicks addressed the audience, expressing her profound pride in Rodrigo. She lauded the singer’s authenticity and encouraged her to remain true to herself as an artist. "Support her. Come and be a part of her women’s rights things; we all will," Nicks implored the crowd. "She’s very special. Take her to your heart. I have."
A Hope for the Future
The sentiment of optimism for the festival’s future was palpable throughout the day. Many performers and attendees alike voiced their hopes for Daisy Chain Fields to become an annual tradition. Mitski, addressing her audience on the main stage, conveyed this sentiment, playfully adding, "No pressure to Olivia." While the official plans for future iterations remain unconfirmed, Rodrigo’s closing remarks to the crowd, expressing that she would "see them next year," offered a strong indication of her intentions and fueled anticipation for what lies ahead.

The success of the inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival underscores a growing demand for events that not only provide exceptional musical experiences but also actively champion social causes and celebrate female talent. The event’s significant philanthropic impact, coupled with its star-studded lineup and meticulous execution, has firmly established it as a landmark occasion in the music festival landscape, promising a bright and impactful future.
